Tradition Classics Parquet Flooring

Everything in this range is solid oak or merbau, sold unfinished, in individual parquet blocks at 70mm wide or 320mm mosaic finger panels, with thicknesses of 8mm, 18mm or 22mm depending on the format. Grades run Prime, Rustic and Natural, giving a choice between a cleaner, more uniform look and one with more visible character in the grain.

Blocks vs mosaic fingers

• Parquet blocks — individual solid blocks, 70mm wide, for laying out yourself in a herringbone pattern
• Mosaic finger panels — pre-assembled 320mm square panels made up of smaller wood "fingers," giving faster coverage per placement than laying individual blocks

Because both formats are sold unfinished, the choice comes down to installation speed versus control over the exact layout. Mosaic panels go down faster since each piece covers more ground; individual blocks give more control over how the pattern lines up, particularly around the edges of a room.

Tumbled texture

Some of the oak blocks come with a tumbled finish, a texture process that softens and slightly rounds the block edges before fitting, giving a worn, aged look rather than the crisp edges of a standard block. This suits a period property or a room where a more lived-in, reclaimed look is wanted, as opposed to a sharp, contemporary finish.

Fitting and finishing

Being unfinished, every board here needs sanding and sealing on site once fitted, which gives full control over the final colour and sheen but adds a step to the installation compared with a pre-finished floor. Like other solid parquet, these blocks are glued or nailed directly to the subfloor rather than floated, and aren't suited to underfloor heating.
