Solid Wood Flooring

Solid wood flooring is milled from a single piece of timber, not layered like engineered boards, which is why a well-maintained solid floor can outlast almost any other flooring type. This range covers oak, beech and maple, in thicknesses from 14mm to 22mm and widths from 90mm to 185mm, including a large stock of Junckers boards alongside Tradition and Evergreen ranges.

Thickness and refinishing

Because there's no veneer, the whole board can be sanded back, not just a thin top layer. A well-maintained solid floor can typically be resanded and refinished many times over its life, which is one of the main reasons solid wood floors laid decades ago are still being restored rather than replaced.

• 14mm and 18mm boards — the more common thickness range, suited to most domestic rooms
• 20.5mm and 22mm boards — thicker stock with more material to work with over multiple refinishing cycles, often chosen for higher-traffic areas

Finish

• Lacquered — sealed and low-maintenance, straightforward to wipe clean day to day
• Oiled — sits closer to the wood's natural colour, easier to spot-repair, needs occasional reoiling
• Unfinished — sanded and sealed on site after fitting, giving full control over the final finish
• Handscraped — a textured surface finish that shows less of the wear that flat, smooth boards can show over time

Fitting and where it works

Solid wood is generally nailed or glued directly to the subfloor rather than floated, and it's not the right choice over underfloor heating, since solid boards move more with temperature changes than engineered wood does. It suits most rooms in a typical home, though very damp spaces like bathrooms are better served by a more moisture-tolerant floor.

FAQ

How many times can solid wood flooring be sanded and refinished?
Several times over its life, since the whole board is solid timber rather than a thin wear layer over a core. Thicker boards (20.5mm–22mm) generally allow for more refinishing cycles than thinner ones.

Is solid wood flooring suitable for underfloor heating?
No, it's not generally recommended. Solid boards move more with heat than engineered wood, which makes engineered flooring the safer choice over UFH.

What's the difference between lacquered and oiled solid wood flooring?
Lacquered floors have a sealed surface that's easy to wipe clean. Oiled floors show more of the wood's natural tone and are easier to spot-repair, but need occasional reoiling.

Can solid wood flooring be fitted in a kitchen?
Yes, though it needs more care around moisture than in drier rooms. Very wet areas like bathrooms are better suited to a more moisture-tolerant floor.
