Adhesives for Professional Floor Fitters: Choosing and Using Correctly
Adhesive choice and application are among the more consequential decisions in any glue-down floor installation. The wrong adhesive, or correct adhesive applied incorrectly, produces failures that are expensive to diagnose and address. Professional floor fitters who understand adhesive chemistry and application requirements reduce their callbacks and their liability exposure significantly.
MS Polymer Adhesives for Wood Floors
Silane-modified polymer (MS polymer) adhesives are the standard choice for gluing down engineered wood boards and solid parquet blocks. Products like Bona R848, Sika T-55 and Mapei Ultrabond P990 1K cure by reaction with ambient moisture and remain permanently flexible once set. The flexibility is important: it allows the floor to expand and contract seasonally without causing adhesion failure or board stress.
MS polymer adhesives bond well to most subfloor types including concrete, plywood and existing adhesive residues. They require application with a notched trowel at a coverage rate of approximately 800 to 1000 grams per square metre. Open time is typically 20 to 40 minutes at room temperature, giving adequate working time for a professional laying boards in sequence.
UFH compatibility is an important consideration with MS polymer adhesives. Most are rated for use over underfloor heating up to the floor surface temperature limit of 27 to 28 degrees Celsius, but check the specific product data sheet as some have lower temperature tolerances.
LVT Adhesives
Glue-down LVT uses pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA) rather than the MS polymer adhesives used for wood. PSA adhesives remain tacky once dry and allow repositioning of tiles during installation, which is important for achieving accurate alignment in LVT installations with visible pattern alignment requirements. Bona R848T, Uzin KE 66 S and Mapei Ultrabond Eco V4 SP are established PSA products for LVT.
The drying time of PSA adhesives before LVT can be laid is important: apply the adhesive, allow it to dry to a consistent tack (typically 20 to 45 minutes depending on conditions), then lay the LVT into the adhesive bed. Laying into wet adhesive can cause displacement; laying into over-dry adhesive produces inadequate bond strength.
Contact Adhesives
Contact adhesives are used for bonding rubber stair nosings, resilient flooring sheet products and some specialist applications. They bond on contact when two adhesive-coated surfaces are brought together; repositioning is not possible once contact is made. They are less commonly used in mainstream floor fitting but are essential for specific applications.
Adhesive Storage and Shelf Life
MS polymer adhesives have a shelf life of 12 months from manufacture when stored correctly (cool, dry, upright). Expired adhesives can be slower to cure and may have reduced bond strength. Always check manufacturing dates on trade purchases and rotate stock to prevent using expired product on jobs.
- MS polymer (Bona R848, Sika T-55): standard for engineered wood and parquet
- PSA (Bona R848T, Uzin KE 66 S): for glue-down LVT installation
- Apply at correct coverage rate with the specified notched trowel size
- Check UFH compatibility for heated subfloor installations
- Rotate stock and check shelf life
- Document adhesive product and batch number for warranty records
Adhesive choice, application rate and timing are technical details that significantly affect installation quality and longevity. Professional fitters who read and follow adhesive product data sheets rather than applying products by feel consistently produce better-bonded floors with fewer callbacks.
