Floor Fitting Checklist for Tradespeople
A systematic checklist is one of the most practical tools for any professional floor fitter. It prevents the kind of avoidable errors that only become apparent after the floor is installed and the client has moved back in, and it creates a documented record of the process that protects both the fitter and the client. This checklist covers the complete process from initial site assessment through to post-installation snagging.
Pre-Installation: Site Assessment
Before ordering materials, assess the site conditions that will affect the installation. Measure the room accurately, including any alcoves and recesses, and calculate material quantities with a minimum 10 per cent waste allowance for cuts. Note the subfloor type (concrete or timber) and condition. Identify the presence of underfloor heating and confirm the system type (electric or hydronic). Check that all other trades have finished; floor fitting should be the last trade in a room if possible.
Assess the room's humidity and temperature conditions. Wood floors should be installed at a room temperature between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius and at a humidity between 45 and 65 per cent. If the room does not meet these conditions, investigate and address before installation begins.
Pre-Installation: Subfloor Preparation
- Moisture test the subfloor and record readings
- Check subfloor flatness: use a 1.8m straightedge, maximum 3mm deviation under 1.8m
- Fill dips with levelling compound; grind down high spots
- Remove all previous floor covering residues
- For floating floors on concrete: check that the DPM underlay covers the complete area including perimeters
- For glue-down: prime the subfloor with appropriate primer if required by the adhesive data sheet
Pre-Installation: Product Acclimatisation
Solid wood and engineered wood must be acclimatised in the room where they will be installed before fitting. Store the products in the room in their boxes for a minimum of 48 hours (solid wood may require longer), with the room at its normal occupied temperature and humidity. Do not acclimatise next to direct heat sources. Check that the products have been inspected for any damage or quality issues before installation begins.
During Installation
- Establish the starting line or centre point based on the room layout
- Apply adhesive at the correct rate using the specified notched trowel
- Maintain correct expansion gaps at all walls and fixed obstacles
- Check alignment regularly; do not allow drift to accumulate
- Use appropriate fitting tools: pull bar, tapping block, spacer wedges
- Clean adhesive squeeze-out from the floor surface before it dries
- Roll glue-down LVT with floor roller after laying
Post-Installation Snagging
- Check all expansion gaps are correct and consistent
- Fit all beading, threshold strips and door bars
- Inspect surface for damage, scratches or contamination
- Document installed products, adhesive used and moisture readings
- Provide the client with maintenance guidance appropriate to the floor type and finish
A completed checklist on every job, kept on file, provides the documentation needed to manage any warranty claims or disputes professionally. It also develops into a systematic habit that prevents the most common installation errors becoming repeated ones.
