Laminate is forgiving, relatively affordable, and designed with the DIYer in mind — but get the basics wrong and you'll be pulling it up within a year. Step 1: Prepare Your Subfloor
The subfloor is the foundation of the entire job. Laminate is a floating floor — it isn't fixed to the subfloor — which means any lumps, dips, or flex beneath it will telegraph straight through to the surface and cause boards to creak, bounce, or crack at the joints over time.
Before you bring a single plank into the room, check the subfloor thoroughly:
- Flatness: Use a long spirit level or straight edge. The subfloor must be flat to within 3mm over a 1.8-metre span. Grind down high spots on concrete; fill dips with a self-levelling compound and allow it to cure fully.
