    Wood Floor Gaps: Causes, Prevention & How to Fix Them

    Wood floor gaps are one of the most common concerns raised by UK homeowners — and in most cases, they are nothing to worry about. If you have solid wood flooring, some degree of gapping is a completely natural result of how timber behaves. Understanding why wood floor gaps appear, when they signal a genuine problem, and what you can do about them will save you unnecessary expense and stress. This guide covers everything you need to know.

    Timber is a hygroscopic material, meaning it absorbs and releases moisture from the surrounding air. As it does so, it expands and contracts — primarily across the width of each board, not along the length. This movement is the root cause of virtually every gap you will ever see in a wood floor.

    In the UK, the pattern is predictable and seasonal:

    • Winter: Central heating runs continuously, lowering indoor humidity. Boards lose moisture and shrink across their width, opening gaps between them.
    • Summer: Higher outdoor humidity raises indoor moisture levels. Boards reabsorb moisture, swell, and those gaps close again.

    This cycle repeats year after year. If your gaps appear in October and disappear by May, your floor is behaving exactly as it should. Solid wood flooring is a natural product, and this movement is an inherent characteristic — not a defect.

    When Are Wood Floor Gaps a Problem?

    Seasonal gapping in solid wood is normal. However, there are specific situations where gaps indicate something has gone wrong and requires investigation.

    Gaps that do not close in summer suggest the floor has dried out beyond its normal range, or that boards have permanently deformed. If summer arrives and the gaps remain, the floor has likely experienced a prolonged period of very low humidity that caused irreversible shrinkage.

    Gaps in engineered wood flooring should always be taken seriously. Engineered boards are constructed from a hardwood veneer bonded to a multi-ply or HDF core, which makes them significantly more dimensionally stable than solid wood. They are designed to resist the kind of movement that causes gapping. If engineered boards are separating, it almost always points to one of the following:

    • A moisture problem beneath the floor — perhaps inadequate damp proof membrane over concrete, or a subfloor that was not sufficiently dry before installation
    • A failure to acclimatise the boards before fitting

    Large, uneven, or localised gaps — particularly where only certain areas of the floor are affected — can also suggest a subfloor problem, a localised heat source, or boards that were wet when installed and have dried unevenly.

    The Role of Central Heating

    Central heating is the single biggest driver of wood floor gaps in UK homes. When the heating comes on in autumn and runs through to spring, indoor relative humidity can drop well below the 45–65% range that timber flooring needs to remain stable. In poorly ventilated modern homes with highly efficient heating systems, it is not unusual for humidity to fall below 30% — conditions that cause significant and sometimes permanent shrinkage.

    Underfloor heating presents a particular challenge. The heat rises through the floor itself, drawing moisture out of the boards more aggressively than radiators do. If your solid wood floor is installed over underfloor heating, gapping is likely to be more pronounced unless humidity is actively managed.

    The practical solution is a humidifier. A whole-house or room humidifier that maintains relative humidity between 45% and 65% throughout the heating season will dramatically reduce seasonal movement and protect your floor over its lifetime. An inexpensive hygrometer lets you monitor conditions accurately.

    Prevention: Getting It Right from the Start

    Most serious wood floor gaps are avoidable. The steps below address the most common causes before they become problems.

    Acclimatisation is essential. Wood flooring must be allowed to adjust to the temperature and humidity of the room it will be installed in before fitting. This means leaving the boards in the room — unsealed, with good air circulation — for a minimum of 48 to 72 hours, and ideally longer for solid wood in particularly dry or humid environments. Fitting boards that have not acclimatised means they will move after installation, often causing either gapping or board cupping depending on the direction of movement.

    Subfloor preparation is equally important. Concrete subfloors must be tested for moisture content and must be within the flooring manufacturer's recommended limits before any wood floor is laid. A subfloor that is too wet will cause boards to absorb excess moisture and then shrink as they dry out — producing gaps.

    Avoid placing wood flooring directly over heat sources. If underfloor heating is present, use a system designed to work with wood flooring, keep surface temperatures within the recommended limit (typically no more than 27°C at floor surface), and ramp heating up and down gradually rather than switching between extremes.

    How to Fix Wood Floor Gaps

    If you have gaps that are not closing seasonally, or gaps that are large enough to trap dirt and debris, there are several repair options depending on the floor type and the nature of the gap.

    Flexible wood filler is the most widely used solution for permanent gaps. It is available in a range of wood tones and is applied directly into the gap, then levelled flush with the surface once dry. The key word here is flexible — never use a rigid filler in a wood floor. Rigid fillers will crack as the floor continues to move seasonally, leaving you with an unsightly repair. A flexible formulation will accommodate some ongoing movement without breaking down.

    Rope filling is a traditional technique particularly suited to older or period timber floors with wide, irregular gaps. Natural fibre rope — typically twisted cotton or jute — is pushed firmly into the gap using a blunt tool and can be stained or painted to match the floor. It accommodates movement well and is reversible, making it a good choice for floors where you want to preserve the character of the original boards.
